Cape Cod Rail Trail
28 miles | Official map here
I biked this trail going North to South, starting at Wellfleet and ending in Hyannis. As far as I know, there’s no direct way to get to Wellfleet from Boston, so I just took the ferry to Provincetown and biked about 17 miles to the trailhead. The journey between Provincetown and Wellfleet was hilly and it felt dangerous, so I’m glad I got this out of the way early. My first thought was to start in Hyannis and travel north since Provincetown seemed like a better place to relax after the trip, but I decided against this based on the direction of the wind that day, and I’m glad I did!
The rail trail itself was much less challenging than my initial ride down from Provincetown to the trailhead. My only complaint is that the ride kind of felt like teleporting between Wellfleet and Hyannis because there were few buildings, stores, signs, or other infrastructure that might have otherwise allowed me to appreciate the cultural gradient that I was riding through. But, I think that might just be the way rail trails usually are, and if I wanted to see signs of culture and cultural shifts, I could have just biked on the roads. I would choose this trail over roads any day.
